Manji Inoue is a Living National Treasure of Arita, and is the oldest Living National Treasure, born in 1929, and continues to create pottery energetically. His works are highly regarded for their beautiful white porcelain and their unique beauty of form.
This piece is a white porcelain incense burner with green glaze carvings by Inoue Manji. It features a soft peony pattern on beautiful white porcelain, and fully expresses the beauty of the neat shape that is unique to Inoue. It was purchased more than 20 years ago, and is a one-off piece that was finished without the use of a mold, using outstanding wheel-throwing techniques.
It is large for a kouro, and has a strong presence when placed on a decorative shelf or tokonoma alcove. Because of its high status, white porcelain is sometimes used when offering tea to the gods at tea ceremonies. Its beauty is further enhanced when placed on a jet-black shin-nuri flower stand.
We hope you will enjoy the world of Inoue Manji's artistic beauty through this work.
