Karatsu Ware唐津焼
Karatsu ware is one of Japan’s most renowned ceramics, originating in the 1580s during the Momoyama period. Influenced by Korean pottery techniques brought over during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasions of Korea, Karatsu ware flourished under the protection of the Edo-era feudal lords. In the 1950s, National Living Treasure Nakazato Muan revived the techniques of Old Karatsu, inspiring over 70 kilns today to develop their unique styles.
Cherished by tea masters, Karatsu ware is often described as “One Ido, Two Raku, Three Karatsu,” highlighting its importance in tea culture. The aesthetic of Karatsu ware is enhanced when used: tea bowls reveal dynamic landscapes when tea is whisked, and plates and bowls harmonize beautifully with the food they hold. As the saying goes, “80% by the maker, 20% by the user” — Karatsu ware is completed through use.

Arita Ware有田焼
Arita ware is famed for its pristine white porcelain and intricate hand-painted designs. Its origins trace back to 1616 when Korean potters brought porcelain-making techniques to Japan. By the late 17th to 18th century, Arita ware was exported to Europe via the Dutch East India Company, becoming highly sought after by aristocrats.
Arita ware is distinguished by two primary styles: Sometsuke (blue-and-white porcelain) and Iro-e (multi-colored overglaze decoration), leading to the development of iconic styles such as Kakiemon and Nabeshima. These techniques continue to be refined today, with Arita porcelain valued worldwide for both tableware and fine art.
