Born in Arita-cho in 1929.
Around 1920, he studied under the 14th Kakiemon Sakaida and Chuemon Okugawa, and mastered the technique of making white porcelain.
From 1968, while working at the Prefectural Arita Ceramics Experiment Station, he studied porcelain molding and glaze, mastering traditional white porcelain production techniques.
Received the Minister of Labor Award for "Contemporary Master Craftsman" and the Minister of Education Award at the Japan Traditional Art Crafts Exhibition.
In 1995, he was certified as an important intangible cultural property holder of white porcelain.

1929 佐賀県西松浦郡有田町に生まれる
1945頃 十四代 酒井田柿右衛門、奥川忠右衛門に師事し、白磁制作を学ぶ
1958 佐賀県展にて入賞（以降、知事賞・美術協会賞など受賞）
1963 一水会陶芸部にて連続入選、一水会賞・会員優賞受賞
1967 九州山口陶磁展 文部大臣奨励賞受賞
1968 第15回 日本伝統工芸展 初入選
1969 米国ペンシルバニア州立大学 美術学科にて作陶指導（派遣教授）
1971 有田町にて井上萬二窯を築窯、独立
1977 労働大臣表彰「現代の名工」受賞
1987 第34回 日本伝統工芸展 文部大臣賞受賞
1995 重要無形文化財「白磁」保持者（人間国宝）に認定
1997 紫綬褒章受章
2003 旭日中綬章受章
現在 日本工芸会参与、有田陶芸協会長
