Nakazato Tarouemon Pottery Studio is a pottery studio that has been carrying on the traditions of Karatsu ware for over 420 years, from the founder Nakazato Matashichi to the current 14th generation Nakazato Tarouemon.
During the Edo period, it served as the official kiln for the Karatsu domain, and the Tojinmachi Ochawan Kiln that was used at the time is still preserved on the kiln grounds as a nationally designated historic site.
Nakazato Muan (the 12th generation Nakazato Tarouemon) was designated a holder of the Important Intangible Cultural Property of Karatsu ware (Living National Treasure) for his achievements in reviving the Karatsu ware style, which had been on the verge of disappearance since the Meiji era, and Nakazato Hoan (the 13th generation Nakazato Tarouemon) was appointed a member of the Japan Art Academy in recognition of his highly artistic works, which incorporated colors and decorations not previously seen in Karatsu ware.
Currently, the 14th generation Nakazato Tarouemon is creating new, contemporary Karatsu ware.
These pieces are made by artisans using carefully selected clay from Tarouemon Kiln, and each piece is carefully crafted.
